What We Say

It’s no secret that Meta (née Facebook) faces increased scrutiny from both regulators and the general public over their handling of user data. From the Cambridge Analytica scandal to the current legal action brought by the EU, one thing’s for sure: Big Tech is facing Big Change when it comes to the issue of user data. 

It’s difficult to predict the impact of these changes on advertisers. For those currently marketing on Meta’s consumer platforms—which include Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Quest—greater regulation is likely to result in reduced access to user data, and changes to how that data can be used for targeted advertising.

Nevertheless, Meta is far from ready to be counted out. Facebook alone directly connects some 1.6 billion people with small businesses worldwide, making it one of the largest digital marketplaces in existence. What’s more, with its contextual ad modules and renewed commitment to consumer privacy, Meta is likely to remain a vital—and lucrative—channel for advertisers for some time.
